Trump's Awkward Handshake With Macron Make Headlines (Photo)
This wouldn't be the first time the act of shaking hands — or rather, the lack thereof — has sparked headlines for President Trump. When he met German Chancellor Angela Merkel in March, Merkel asked for a handshake and Trump didn't respond.
During their first meeting, President Trump and France's Emmanuel Macron shook hands for long enough to catch the attention of the pool ahead of a NATO summit in Brussels on Thursday.
Per the pool report: "They shook hands for an extended period of time. Trump, 70, and Macron, 39, gripped the other's hand with considerable intensity, their knuckles turning white and their jaws clenching and faces tightening."
Trump has described himself as "a germ freak" and called handshakes "barbaric." In his 1997 book "The Art of the Comeback," Trump wrote he'd "often thought of taking out a series of newspaper ads encouraging the abolishment of the handshake."
